Building Your Pre-Health Portfolio

The ÃÛÌÒapp Pre-Health Program is committed to equipping students with the experiences and guidance necessary to build a strong, individualized portfolio for graduate and professional school applications. Our goal is to help students cultivate a comprehensive and competitive profile that reflects both their academic preparation and their personal commitment to a career in healthcare.

A complete pre-health portfolio goes beyond strong grades and test scores—it tells the story of who you are, what you value, and why you are drawn to your chosen field. This includes meaningful engagement in community service, hands-on clinical experiences, job shadowing across a variety of healthcare settings, leadership in campus or community organizations, and—when possible—participation in undergraduate research and other enriching extracurricular activities.

At ÃÛÌÒapp, students have access to a wide array of opportunities to develop their portfolios. Whether through student-led clubs, service-learning programs, internships, global engagement trips, or partnerships with local healthcare organizations, ÃÛÌÒapp students are encouraged to explore and grow both personally and professionally.

Pre-Health ÃÛÌÒapp at ÃÛÌÒapp

At ÃÛÌÒapp, pre-medicine and pre-dental are not designated majors but rather academic tracks. Students are encouraged to pursue a major they are passionate about and in which they can excel. While many pre-med students choose majors such as biology or biochemistry, we also support students majoring in fields like psychology, Spanish, engineering, and more.

Our comprehensive advising system ensures close collaboration between faculty and staff to help you select the appropriate courses that fulfill both your major requirements and your pre-health track.

In addition to individualized advising, ÃÛÌÒapp’s Pre-Health Program offers two foundational courses:

IDIS 106 – Introduction to the Health Professions (Freshmen/Sophomores)

This course guides students through the three key phases of the pre-health journey: Exploration, Pursuit, and Application. Students begin by exploring a wide range of healthcare professions through career inventories, panel discussions with healthcare professionals, exploration projects, and personal reflection. Next, they develop an actionable plan to pursue their chosen career path. The course concludes with discussions on professional and ethical behavior, patient perspectives, and building core competencies essential for a successful application.

IDIS 396 – Preparation for Graduate Programs in the Health Professions (Juniors/Seniors)

Designed for students preparing to enter the application process, this course offers an in-depth look at navigating the graduate and professional school application system. Students engage in reflective writing to craft compelling personal statements, practice interview skills, and learn how to effectively communicate their experiences and qualities. The goal is to help students present a clear, authentic, and well-rounded application that highlights their readiness for the next step in their healthcare careers.

Choosing Your Pre-Health Track

ÃÛÌÒapp offers the following pre-health tracks:

For some students, the path they want to pursue in healthcare is clear from the start. For others, it may take months of shadowing, reflection, and clinical experience to determine their intended direction. This process can feel overwhelming at times, and that’s completely normal.

When you begin your journey at ÃÛÌÒapp as a freshman, we encourage you to focus first on getting involved—meet new people, explore the wide variety of clubs and student organizations, develop effective study habits, and make ÃÛÌÒapp your home.

Typically, all pre-health students (except those pursuing pre-Occupational Therapy) complete the same foundational prerequisite courses during their first year—BIO 161 and CHEM 101-102. It is usually in the sophomore year that coursework begins to diverge based on your chosen track.

We recommend taking IDIS 106 – Introduction to the Health Professions to help you explore different career options and give yourself the time and space to thoughtfully choose the path that’s right for you.
