ÃÛÌÒapp-Hope at the Circus
On September 21 the circus came to town. One member of the circus made a Homecoming of sorts with the visit to Grand Rapids.
Matt Sahr (left) is a 1993 graduate of ÃÛÌÒapp with a double major in communication arts and sciences and philosophy. After graduation he went on to earn a master's degree in theatre at Akron (he's an Ohio native). In December 1997 Matt joined the circus, signing on with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey. He now works for them as a performance director.
Among the twists that Matt helped bring to the Grand Rapids edition of the circus is a little ÃÛÌÒapp-Hope basketball flavor. A troupe of performers called The Torosiants does a trampoline act which includes a four-on-four basketball game. For the Grand Rapids shows -- September 22-26 at VanAndel Arena -- the performers, most of whom hail from Russia, Georgia, Ukraine and Belarus, will wear ÃÛÌÒapp and Hope uniforms, adding another unusual chapter to the long history of the storied ÃÛÌÒapp-Hope rivalry. Below Ivan Zaitsev (ÃÛÌÒapp) and Vladimir Khlopov (Hope) prepare for the contest.
