Continuing the Conversation: Democracy and Education in a time of Crisis

Please join for the third event in our “Democracy and Education” series. The primary goal of this event is to engage in an interactive discussion based on some of the big ideas and questions that have emerged from our previous events. In addition, we will look specifically at the question of how the current political context threatens our nation’s commitment to democratic education.

We will consider, together, questions like:

  • How are some of the recent Executive Orders threatening democratic education in our schools and universities?

  • How can educational institutions (PK-12 and higher education) equip democratic citizens? What are the implications for what we teach and how we teach?

  • What are actions that individuals can take in response to policies that they believe are harmful to citizens and/or a threat to democracy?

  • What does it mean to teach the truth when we can’t seem to agree on what is true?

  • What impact do changes to (or elimination of) the Department of Education have on students, schools, and communities?
